Preventive Measures That Can Improve Your Heart Health
February 21, 2009 by admin
by Dr. Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer
Around 700,000 people in North America die from heart attacks each year. The most common cause of heart attacks is a blood clot caused by coronary artery disease (CAD). Yet, as bad as CAD is, heart attacks from narrow arteries and blood clots are not the only conditions that cause heart disease. Many heart diseases exist and are preventable with just a little care.
Common conditions
High blood pressure
The most common cause of heart disease in North America is high blood pressure; it affects 73 million people in the U.S. alone. High blood pressure may be caused by:
- Disease in the blood vessels that cause them to narrow
- Imbalances in the kidneys, lungs and liver
- Cardiomyopathy – a disease of the heart muscle
How to help: Keys to reducing high blood pressure are found in the 10 Essentials. Some people can reduce their high blood pressure simply by practicing deep breathing. Other techniques include increasing fruits and vegetables, and increasing fiber and water while reducing sodium.
Coronary artery disease
Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when plaque builds up inside a blood vessel of the heart. CAD affects over 16 million people in the U.S. It leads to angina pectoris – pain caused by poor blood flow to the heart muscles – and is associated with heart attack.
How to help: Coronary artery disease responds well to a low-fat, high-fiber diet of mainly fruits and vegetables. Stress reduction and daily exercise are also effective therapies in combating CAD. Almost all heart specialists recommend Omega-3 oils such as those in OmegaPrime as effective tools in combating CAD.
Congestive heart failure
Congestive heart failure (CHF) and related forms of heart failure may affect over five million people in North America. It is strongly related to diabetes and obesity. Among the most common triggers in CHF is obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea builds up blood pressure in an attempt to get oxygen to critical tissues such as the heart and brain.
How to help: Most people with CHF respond to treatment for sleep apnea, treatment with CoEnzyme Q-10 (CoQ-10), and the other suggestions already mentioned.
Common remedies
Body weight and blood sugar control
Achieving and maintaining optimum body weight and blood sugar control are two suggestions that always top the list of remedies for all forms of heart disease. The Leanology program can help you meet those objectives. Leanology is much more than a “diet plan” – it helps you make the necessary lifestyle adjustments through nutrition and activity to help you reach and maintain a healthier weight.
Nutrients
- OmegaPrime can help reduce the “stickiness” of blood to protect against clots and may slow down the process of plaque formation. One or two grams are enough to help protect against heart disease, but much more is needed if the heart is already diseased.
- CoQ-10 offers significant benefits to the heart. It should be taken at bedtime to reduce the impact of sleep apnea on the heart and brain.
- Antioxidants such as Vitamin C and resveratrol (found in Super Antioxidant Complex) are also best taken at night, then again in the morning.
- Special proteins found in garlic and other antioxidants such as bilberry (found in VisionGuard) can help improve lipids such as cholesterol while opening the tiniest blood vessels in the legs, hands, eyes, ears and brain.
In the end, many of the problems with heart disease can be protected against or even solved with the tools we have readily at hand (always follow the advice of your healthcare provider for your personal condition). What about the impact of emotions on heart health? Can the 10 Essentials assist us here as well? Next week our Wellness Report will address the connection between mental/dental health and your heart.

The Unexpected Benefits of Vitamin C
by Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer
A professor of mine once told me that newly graduated doctors have 100 cures for every disease. Experienced doctors often use one remedy for 100 diseases. It seems that this is proving to be quite true with our old friend, Vitamin C.
The Best Vitamin C
There are many types of Vitamin C. Some supplements contain diverse minerals while others contain related ingredients like bioflavonoids. There are good reasons for each of these additions. Yet, time has not proven the fancier forms to be superior to the natural, non-acidic form of Vitamin C (sodium-L-ascorbate).
The primary pathway for Vitamin C transport into the bloodstream is through the sodium transport channel. Now, sodium has a really bad reputation because many of us put too much salt (sodium chloride) on our food. But, the fruits and vegetables we eat are naturally very high in sodium. Our blood is naturally high in sodium. In fact, the sodium content of our blood is about 32 times greater than the potassium level in our blood. It is comparable to the sodium content in sea water.
Dr. Libby’s Vital C has the best profile for absorption of this important nutrient.
New Uses For an Old Remedy
Three articles in medical literature recently caught my attention.
- Toxins
The first one was a two-year-long discussion about the protective effects of Vitamin C against pesticides and other environmental toxins. This is important because we dump 2.5 million tons of pesticides into our biosphere every year (Environmental Medicine part 4, Dr. Walter Crinnon). The discussion of Vitamin C and pesticides was published in 2007 and 2008 in the journal Toxicology and Industrial Health. It clearly shows the protective effect of large amounts of Vitamin C against common environmental toxins.- Cholesterol
The second article appeared in the February 2008 edition of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. It demonstrated another benefit of Vitamin C in people with elevated cholesterol. You see, Vitamin C in the liver binds excess cholesterol and drains it through the bile ducts into the intestines. Fiber in the intestines soaks up the cholesterol and carries it out of the body. If our diet does not have enough fiber to eliminate the cholesterol we will likely reabsorb it. In fact, most of the cholesterol in our bloodstream has been excreted and reabsorbed numerous times.Vitamin C binds cholesterol and takes it out of the liver. Vitamin C also helps protect the lining of blood vessels – making them like Teflon to sticky LDL cholesterol. Instead of damaging the blood vessels, oxidized LDL slides off the walls of your arteries and is carried back to the liver by HDL cholesterol.- Blood pressure
The third article came from the October 2008 Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypertension. It clearly showed how large reservoirs of Vitamin C can help reduce high blood pressure. Antioxidants (especially Vitamin C) may reduce poisons in the tissues called aldehydes – think of the poison formaldehyde as a good example. Poisons drive up blood pressure; Vitamin C helps drive down poisons and can result in blood pressure reduction.
Conclusion
Health is built one habit at a time. The more we learn and live the 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness, the healthier we become. Essential #4 tells us to eat nutritiously – including the proper use of supplements. Science is firmly behind using nutrients and nurturing to improve the quality of our lives.

What Are Adaptogens? Part One
And other frequently asked questions about Adaptogen 10 Plus!
Adaptogens are unique plants that are genetically coded to adjust to environmental conditions, no matter how harsh. Adaptogens change in response to environmental stresses.
Q: Why is it called 10 Plus?
A: There are 10 plants in the world that are adaptogens and they’re all in Adaptogen 10 Plus. “Plus” we’ve added health-enhancing antioxidants and aloe vera.
Q: Exactly how do adaptogens adapt to their surroundings?
A: Every plant — and every person — has a range of ability to adapt to stress. If it is within your genetic ability to meet the stress, you are said to adapt. lf the stress exceeds your ability to adapt, you experience health failure and collapse. The same is true for plants. Adaptogens are plants that have shown resilience in stressful situations where other plants have tailed. Of the 4,000 plants with remarkable adaptation, 10 have been shown to have benefits for human health and performance with no toxicity at any level. When humans and animals ingest adaptogens, these plants impart their strength and ability to adapt.
Q: When is the best time to take this product?
A: There is no wrong time to take Adaptogen 10 Plus, but we recommend taking it in the morning. This fortifies your body to meet the stresses of your day. If you are not getting adequate sleep, you may benefit more by taking it at night (at least for the first few weeks) to provide your body with the proper nutrients it needs to enhance your sleep.
Q: How much should I take daily?
A: One serving is an ounce of Adaptogen 10 Plus, about one capful. We suggest you start with one serving; but, you can take more as your stress level demands.
Q: How long will it take me to feel the effects of this product?
A: Many people report a quick feeling of well-being, calmness, and clarity Since we’re all individuals, your results may be different.
Q: Why does it act differently with different people?
A: Adaptogens naturally adapt to their surroundings. When you drink an ounce of Adaptogen 10 Plus, the adaptogens change to adjust to your specific needs. Depending upon what you need, your results could differ from day to day.
Q: Is thre anyone who shouldn’t take it?
A: Pregnant or nursing women, and anyone with injuries or diseases involving the brain or nervous system should check with their health care professional before trying Adaptogen 10 Plus. Including people with chronic migraines, epilepsy, or those recovering from surgery.
Q: Are there side effects?
A: By definition, adaptogens are plants; antioxidants are safe and natural, and aloe vera doesn’t have any known side effects. Because Adaptogen 10 Plus is entirely plant-based, our bodies recognize the ingredients as food. If you have food allergies or allergies to specific vitamins, we advise you to check the label before trying our product.
Q: Are there any drug interactions?
A: There are no known drug interactions, but it’s a good idea to check with your health care professional if you’re concerned.
Q: Is Adaptogen 10 Plus good for diabetics, pregnant or nursing women?
A: Diabetics will benefit from Adaptogen 10 Plus because their life conditions are stressful to their bodies. We recommend pregnant or nursing women check with their health care providers before taking the product.

With Age, Or If You Take Statins, CoQ-10 Supplementation Is Absolutely Crucial
December 11, 2008 by admin
CoQ-10 helps to generate most of your body’s fuel
What exactly is CoEnzyme Q-10 (CoQ-10) and why is it so important to our continued good health? CoQ-10 is the perfect marriage of vitamins, antioxidants and Omega-3 fats, and is created when all of these important nutrients combine inside every one of your millions of cells. Many experts believe that CoQ-10 is the key spark to ignite the fuel that generates most of the total energy required by your body. And those organs with the highest energy requirements — such as the heart, lungs and liver — have the highest CoQ-10 concentrations.
Without enough CoQ-10, none of the systems in your body can function because they don’t have enough fuel to do their jot. After age 50, you are basically ‘running on empty” when it comes to your body’s production of CoQ-10. That’s why supplementation is a must for anyone in that age group.
How can you tell if you’re lacking in CoQ-10?
In the early stages, the deficiency may start showing up as a wide variety of dental problems. If you suffer from sensitive teeth or bleeding, swollen or shrinking gums, your body is telling you that you’ve already exceeded your ability to produce CoQ-10.
The CoQ-10 and statin connection
Several studies have confirmed that statin drugs such as Lipitor and Zocor interfere with CoQ-1O production, causing blood levels of CoQ-10 to drop. So, if you’re taking statin drugs I for a heart condition, don’t hesitate to discuss the benefits of CoQ-10 supplementation with your health- care provider.
What’s the best CoQ-10 supplement for you?
There are many supplements on the market, but they are not all made alike, Remember: It’s not how much you ingest, but how much you absorb that counts. TriVita’s CoQ-10 is formulated to be in perfect balance for your body’s nutritional needs.
In fact, studies show TriVita’s CoQ-l0 has up to 10 times better absorption with soft gel caps than the lower- quality dry form found on many drugstore shelves. This high absorption rate means that TriVita’s CoQ-10 goes directly to the areas where your body needs it most.
This supplement can help save lives. It nourishes your heart and brain and provides power to your entire body, If you’re over 50, want greater stamina, have gum problems or sensitive teeth, or are taking a statin drug, you owe it to yourself to see how TriVita CoEnzyme Q-10 can make a difference.*
SUCCESS STORIES
“ … the CoEnzyme Q-10 has been a tremendous help for her.”
“My sister and I both love many of TriVita’s products, but the CoEnzyme Q-10 has been a tremendous help for her. She was having trouble with her gums and after taking the CoEnzyme Q-10, they are tighter. This in turn helps to prevent gum disease. We are both so thrilled with all of TriVita’s products. We share our experiences with everyone! Thanks, TriVita!!”
— Diane H. Harrington, DE
*If you take statins, you need CoQ-10. Consult with your healthcare provider to find out whether you’re a good candidate for CoQ-10 supplementation.

Super Fruits Essential To Good Health?
December 8, 2008 by admin

| What are Super Fruits and why are they essential to your good health? | |
| Enjoy exotic fruits full of nutrient power in TriVita’s convenient NutraFruits
It seems like almost every month we hear about a new discovery with extravagant health claims. In years past, some of these claims were unbelievable. However, Super Fruits really do help provide protection from serious dietary deficiencies.
|
|
| Battle inflammation and aging A definition for Super Fruits might include: a food that has exceptional nutrient density; a food that has extremely powerful antioxidant capacity; or a food that has the potential for reducing disease risk.
|
![]() |
| Can any food meet all of these requirements? The answer is definitely YES! Most Super Fruits deliver a full day’s requirement for specific nutrients in a single serving. Super Fruits also “put out the fire” of inflammation by generously donating anti-inflammatory antioxidants wherever there is a need. Super Fruit antioxidants help fight the battle against the calendar by turning back the clock on premature aging. So, Super Fruits really are super!
How they help As you know, we all need the nutrients provided in fruits and vegetables. Health experts agree that disease prevention is best effected with the following amount of fruits and vegetables daily: o Children: five servings According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, North American adults eat less than three servings of fruits and vegetables daily. This habit has caused the death rate from heart disease, cancer and many other causes to skyrocket. Worse yet, those who choose to reject the antioxidant protection from fruits and vegetables end their lives with nine to 17 years of disability. When we formulated TriVita’s NutraFruits we packed it with over 30 fruits and vegetables – including powerful Super Fruits. When Super Fruit consumption is high, disease incidence is low. Modern medical research confirms that people who eat Super Fruits regularly enjoy a reduction in diseases ranging from Alzheimer’s and heart disease to leukemia and prostate cancer. Of course, we still need to make dietary choices that give us a healthy advantage. In the context of a healthy lifestyle, Super Fruits can be a welcome addition. Take a variety of Super Fruits to take advantage of the strengths offered by each one. Use them daily to ensure a life of wellness and vitality! Source VitaJournal November 2008 pg 20 |

New Hope For Diabetes Sufferers
Proper nutrition, exercise and vitamin supplementation can help people with diabetes enjoy a healthy, productive life By Dr. Samuel N. Grief, M.D., CCFP, FCFP
Diabetes is a silent enemy
Every year, millions of Americans live their lives not noticing that they have subtle warning signs of diabetes. These less obvious signs, such as change in vision, fatigue, sleepiness and trouble fighting off infections, may not necessarily make you think of diabetes… but they should! It is usually the more obvious symptoms, such as unintentional weight loss, excess thirst and urination and fainting that signal the onset of diabetes and spur people to action.
Remember, if you are diagnosed with diabetes, life does not end! However, change is required in order to correct some of the imbalances that led to the development of diabetes in the first place.
First, take stock of your weight
Obesity causes approximately 60% of all cases of type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes. Losing weight is very likely to lessen the need for prescription medicine to control diabetes. Second, learning to count carbohydrates is necessary for all people with diabetes in order to keep the blood sugar relatively stable and free of any wild fluctuations. Limiting carbohydrate intake may also minimize the need for insulin.
Third, exercise will help improve your body’s natural sensitivity to its own or to any injected insulin you provide. Many people are not sure why they end up with diabetes. For most, a combination of genetic predisposition and lifestyle habits sets off a slow and steady decline in pancreatic function. This decline is inevitable unless the above lifestyle modifications are introduced. Taking supplements to help keep diabetes away is tempting. But do they really work?
Good news from the scientific world regarding vitamins and diabetes prevention
A recent study of middle-aged and older men and women was undertaken to see whether the rate of developing diabetes would be affected by how much Vitamin C was circulating in the blood among the study population’s participants. Vitamin C is a known antioxidant and promotes the well-being of several organ systems, including the heart, blood vessels, skin, gums, teeth and the immune system. This particular study concluded that those individuals with the highest blood levels of Vitamin C were significantly less likely to develop diabetes over the 12-year study than those with the lowest levels.
This is outstanding news! Translating this news into real-world practical advice, if you or any member of your family would like to lessen the risk for developing diabetes, consider eating more Vitamin C-rich foods. Specific Vitamin C-rich foods include:
• Oranges and other citrus fruits
• Sweet and hot peppers
• Cantaloupe
• Potatoes (baked, not fried)
• Cherries.
Vitamin C can also be obtained through supplements
If you choose to supplement, be sure you take a high-quality one that contains the appropriate amount to boost your blood level. Healthcare professionals recommend anywhere from several hundreds to several thousands of miligrams of Vitamin C per day.
Finally, diabetes is a known risk factor for heart disease, eye disease, skin infections and kidney disease. Fortunately, Vitamin C is known to help improve blood flow and as an antioxidant protects against sun damage to the eyes and skin, as well. The bottom line is this: eat a healthy and balanced diet, stay active and supplement with the right combination of vitamins and minerals to help stave off or keep your medical conditions under control, especially diabetes.

TriVita’s Vitamin C supplements
Vitamin C, A Boost To Your Health & Well-Being
Summary
As cooler temperatures arrive, many people like to load up on Vitamin C to ward off colds.
Vitamin C and your body
Humans are one of the few mammals that can’t produce Vitamin C. That’s right; your body doesn’t make or store this vital nutrient so you must replenish your body’s supply of it every day. Why?
Bones – All the minerals in your bones require Vitamin C to turn them into health-building materials.
Blood – Your blood needs Vitamin C to convert iron into hemoglobin, a protein in your red blood cells.
Collagen – Vitamin C is required to form collagen; collagen in turn forms the body’s connective tissues such as blood vessels, tendons, ligaments and bones.
Gums – Vitamin C helps maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Immune system function – Vitamin C activates immune cells called lymphocytes. Vitamin C also acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting your body from free radicals; these damaging molecules can result from metabolism, environmental toxins and stress. Free radicals have been implicated in conditions ranging from heart disease and cancer to arthritis and inflammation. In addition to protecting against free radicals, Vitamin C can help expand the lifespan of other antioxidants such as Vitamins A and E.
Vitamin C and diabetes
A study in the July 2008 Archives of Internal Medicine showed that those with higher Vitamin C levels had a 62% lower risk of developing Type II diabetes than those with lower levels of Vitamin C. That’s great news considering that 24 million people in the United States alone have diabetes (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
Vitamin C and cancer
A 2008 study from the National Institutes of Health and the University of Kansas showed that when Vitamin C was administered intravenously to mice, it reduced the weight of ovarian, brain and pancreatic cancer tumors by 41 to 53%! The body will only allow a certain amount of Vitamin C to be absorbed when it’s taken orally, so researchers wanted to test the results of intravenous Vitamin C. What they found is that while Vitamin C shrank cancer tumors, it did not affect normal cells. Other conditions that Vitamin C has been shown to help include:
• Cardiovascular disease
• Stroke
• High cholesterol
• Macular degeneration
• Aging skin.
Vitamin C and you
So now the question is: How much Vitamin C do you need? Individual needs for Vitamin C depend on a variety of factors; one way to determine how much your body can use is by doing the Vitamin C Flush. savings on TriVita Non-Acidic Vitamin C, see page 12.) The Vitamin C Flush helps you figure out how much Vitamin C you should be taking each day. Plus, the Vitamin C Flush can help detoxify your system. Your need for Vitamin C may diminish when you eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. You may need more Vitamin C if you are:
• Sick
• Running a fever
• Recovering from surgery
• Pregnant
• Breastfeeding
The bottom line? A diet rich in fruits and vegetables as well as high-quality supplements can help ensure you get the Vitamin C you need for optimum health. By actively taking control of your health now, you can help avoid the usual sniffles, sneezing and coughing that come with colder weather – and you can reap the protective health benefits of this amazing vitamin

The Truth About Alzheimer’s Disease

| In recognition of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month the follow article is an excerpt taken from November 2008 VitaJournal Pg 22.
Summary |
|
| Myth: Alzheimer’s disease is genetic; there is nothing we can do about it.Truth: AD is the accumulation of many years of damage to your brain, causing plaque to build up and nerves to tangle. There are prevention strategies that work to help reduce the damage to our brain and to reduce the chances of AD. The chances of being diagnosed with AD increase as we age. AD affects about half of people age 85 and older. | ![]() |
| A gene defect that predisposes a person to AD is called the MTHFR defect. This gene pumps out HCY in very high amounts. What is the solution for elevated HCY? Foods and food supplements rich in B vitamins. (A published clinical trial of HCY Guard demonstrated that it reduced elevated HCY levels by 35% in just 42 days!)
So, while there are definite genetic markers to help us determine our AD risk, there are also proven strategies to help us protect against the damage that may lead to AD. Reduce your risk by reducing toxic, inflammatory, brain-destroying levels of homocysteine. Myth: Only drugs are powerful enough to stop Alzheimer’s disease Truth: AD prevention depends to a large extent on the choices we make every day. According to the National Institutes of Health, the majority of AD prevention strategies rest in our own hands. o Reduce toxins, including toxic levels of HCY o Meticulously manage your blood pressure, blood sugar and LDL (“bad” cholesterol) levels During National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, let’s use this opportunity to learn all we can about AD prevention strategies and implement them daily.
